About Middle River, MD
Middle River is an unincorporated community located to the Northeast of Baltimore. It’s home to approximately 23,000 people and 9,400 households. It’s a popular location for families, with about 6,400 families living here in total. Around 25% of the community’s residents are under the age of 18.
Many of the area’s early settlers were Appalachian migrants. In fact, Middle River was once referred to as “Little Appalachia.” While the town had its first train station in 1877, the wave of migrants led to significant development in the town. In the 1930s and 40s, a housing community was built to house employees of the Martin Aerospace Company.
One of the area’s more interesting attractions is the Glenn L Martin Aviation Museum. This historical museum is home to many preserved airplanes and is a must-see attraction for anyone with an interest in aviation. Some of the aircraft on display here are on loan from the Army and Navy. There are even open cockpit days when visitors have the chance to see the interior of some of the planes.
North Point State Battlefield is another historical attraction that’s popular with both locals and visitors. This is where the Battle of North Point was fought during the War of 1812. Today, you’ll find wetlands, meadows, and a boardwalk here, as well as plaques that provide insight into the area’s history.
There are several parks in the area, including Gunpowder Falls State Park, which is a popular destination for kayakers. Visitors that are looking for a playground can visit Eastern Regional Park, while people that are interested in hiking or birdwatching can stop by Marshy Point Nature Center.
If you’d like to spend time along the water, there are quite a few local restaurants that provide a waterfront view. This is a wonderful place to see if you’d like to enjoy nature and find out more about Maryland’s history.
